 BREAST LIFT

Factors like the loss of skin elasticity, gravity, weight loss, pregnancy and breast-feeding ultimately affect the shape and firmness of your breasts. Patients who are generally satisfied with the size of their breasts can have a breast lift to raise and firm them, resulting in a more youthful breast contour. In cases of patients being unhappy about having lost a significant amount of breast volume over time, implants inserted in conjunction with a breast lift can increase breast size. Simultaneously, the shape and position of the breasts are enhanced.

DO I NEED A BREAST LIFT?

If you have any or some of the underlying conditions, you may want to consider the option of a breast lift -

  • breasts that are pendulous, but?of? satisfactory size
  • breasts lacking substance or firmness
  • nipples and areolas pointing downward, especially positioned below the breast crease

Although a breast lift can be performed at any age, plastic surgeons usually recommend waiting until breast development has stopped. Factors like pregnancy and breast-feeding may have major and unpredictable effects on the size and shape of your breasts.

INDIVIDUAL CONSULTATION

During the consultation, you will be asked to point out your desired breast shape and size.

This would include discussion with your plastic surgeon about how your nipples and areolas will be repositioned. You should mention anything else about your breasts that you would like to see improved.

BREAST LIFT SURGERY EVALUATION

After examining your breasts, your plastic surgeon will take measurements and perhaps photographs for your medical record. Factors like the size and shape of your breasts, the quality of your skin, and the placement of the nipples and areolas will be carefully evaluated.

A detailed medical history is very important. Post or planned weight loss will affect the outcome and needs to be discussed fully with your surgeon.

HOW A BREAST LIFT IS PERFORMED

Quite frequently three incisions are involved in the method of breast lift. The first incision is made around the areola. The second runs vertically from the bottom edge of the areola to the crease underneath the breast. The third horizontal incision is made beneath the breast and follows the natural curve of the breast crease.

After the excess breast skin has been removed by the surgeon, the nipple and areola are shifted to a higher position.

The stretched areola, which is frequent in a sagging breast, can be reduced in size. Skin that was formerly located above the areola is brought down and together beneath it to reshape the breast.

If after a discussion, you and your plastic surgeon decide that it is desirable to perform your breasts enlargement at the same time as breast lift, this will require insertion of breast implants. In case you consider this option, your surgeon will review the necessary information with you and may provide you with a brochure on breast augmentation.

UNDERSTANDING RISKS

You and your plastic surgeon can best discuss the risks and potential complications of surgery on a personal basis.

A few potential complications that may be Post reduction, it is possible that the breasts may not be perfectly symmetrical or the nipple height may vary slightly. Desired, minor adjustments, if any, can be made at a later time. In rare cases permanent loss of sensation in the nipples or breasts may occur. In certain instances, where incisions may have healed poorly Revisionary surgery is sometimes helpful.

Breast lift surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis, or at most, a day’s stay is needed

WHEN CAN MY NORMAL ACTIVITIES BE RESUMED?

Post breast reduction surgery, it is often possible to resume work within just a couple of weeks, depending on your job. Quite often, you can resume most of your normal activities, including some form of mild exercise, after several weeks.

Experiencing some mild, periodic discomfort during this time might persist, but such feelings are normal. Severe pain should be reported to your doctor.

Any sexual activity should be abstained from for a minimum of one week. Your plastic surgeon might advise you to wait longer. After that, you must take care to be extremely gentle with your breasts for at least the next six weeks.

HOW LONG WILL THE RESULTS LAST?

Your breast size should remain fairly constant unless you gain or lose a significant amount of weight or become pregnant. However, natural factors like gravity and aging will eventually affect the size and shape of virtually every woman’s breasts.

But certainly, without the excessive weight of large breasts, you may discover greater enjoyment in playing sports and engaging in physical activity.

The incisions from your breast reduction surgery will heal and fade over time. It is important to realize, however, that the incision lines will be permanently visible, more so in some individuals than others. Fortunately, the incisions for breast reduction
extremely gentle with your breasts for at least the next several weeks.

RESULTS OF A BREAST LIFT

You may realize that you feel less sensation in the nipple and areola areas, which is usually temporary.

For sensation to return to normal, it may take weeks, months or even more than a year. Your breasts may also require some time to assume a more natural shape. Scars will initially be red or pink in color and will remain this way for many months following surgery.

Breast lift surgery will make your breasts firmer and more uplifted. The position of your areolas and nipples will be enhanced, and the size of your areolas will be aesthetically pleasing as well. Over time, the incisions from your breast lift surgery will heal and fade. However, it is important to understand that the incision lines will be permanently visible. In a few cases, there will eventually be only faint lines.

In certain cases, individuals may have incision lines that are more noticeable. Fortunately, the incisions for your breast lift are in locations easily concealed by clothing, even low-cut necklines. Your breast size should remain fairly constant unless you gain or lose a significant amount of weight or
