Inventor of Hip Resurfacing addresses workshop at Wockhardt Hospitals

Dr. Kushal Malhan & Suhas Aradhye welcome Derek McMinn, inventor of Hip Resurfacing, to the workshop.

Hip resurfacing is an advanced type of bone-conserving hip replacement. The technique constitutes resurfacing of the upper part of the thigh-bone with a metal-on-metal replacement. It offers tremendous advantages over standard hip replacement techniques as it allows a full range of movement, squatting, sitting on the floor and high level sports activity without the risk of dislocation as is the case in conventional hip replacements.

Wockhardt Bone & Joint Hospital, Mumbai, organised a workshop in April to increase awareness amongst orthopaedic practitioners and to demonstrate the hip resurfacing technique to them.

Our hospital invited Derek McMinn, the inventor of the hip resurfacing technique, to India to lecture at the workshop, titled 'Wockhardt Birmingham Hip Resurfacing Workshop'. Derek McMinn from the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham, UK is world-renowned for devising the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing.

Dr. Kaushal Malhan, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Wockhardt hospital, performed the surgery and demonstrated it during the meet. Dr. Malhan is one of the few surgeons offering this surgery in India and the only person performing it in Maharashtra.
